Roanoke FiddleFest

2004 - 2010

Roanoke FiddleFest is a nonprofit music festival held at Hollins University each year in late June. The festival focuses on traditional bluegrass, old time, and American string music. Profits from the festival benefit local community organizations that support the arts.

For FiddleFest, I created a website, promotional posters, a program booklet and two commercials. I also cover photography and videography on the event. FiddleFest employs a variety of social networks and tools, including Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube. Festival photos are posted to Flickr, and customers are encouraged to share their own in the Flickr Photo Pool.

Ferrum College

Ferrum College is a small private college in Southwestern Virginia. I was employed by Ferrum in the Public Relations department, where I was responsible for redesigning and maintaining the school's website.

I no longer manage the Ferrum site, but you can launch a live demo of the site in a new window. The live demo contains many of the pages I made during my employment at Ferrum.

Zoe Brown Photography

Zoe Brown is a professional photographer specializing in portraits, weddings/engagements, and band/club photography.

Zoe's website uses the phpFlickr class by Dan Coulter. phpFlickr is a wrapper for the Flickr API, and it allows the site to pull photos from Zoe's existing Flickr account. Zoe can update her website with new photos by uploading the photos to her Flickr account and tagging them.

When she wants a photo removed from the website, she simply untags it. Therefore Zoe can update the content on her website while updating her Flickr, a technology she was familiar with before we began the project.

DC Bass Strummit

The DC Bass Strummit needed a versatile advertisement to function as a magazine ad, large poster, and small poster.

Three versions of the same ad allow the workshop promoters to get the most out of a single design. A black and white version allowed them to print copies cheaply themselves.

Conner & Miller

Conner & Miller is an acoustic music duo based in Southwest Virginia. When they launched their new tour, Conner & Miller needed a website and promotional photos.

The members of Conner & Miller had blogging and Wordpress experience and wanted to update the site themselves, so I created a custom Wordpress template for their site. The website uses the Wordpress plugin Gigs Calendar by Dan Coulter to archive and display show dates. This allows the band members to post show dates themselves as soon as a show is booked.

Whim Internet Magazine

2004 - 2007

Whim is Radford University's student-run Internet Magazine. I joined the staff in 2004 and served as Executive Director for three publishing seasons (semesters). As Director I was responsible for all facets of the magazine's content and production.

Whim produced 24 - 30 articles weekly and was redesigned each year. During my tenure at Whim I designed four unique website layouts.

Cantaloupe CMS

When I took over as Executive Director, Whim had no publication or submission system. The magazine accepted submissions by email and the staff created flat individual HTML files for every article or other piece of content on the site. This was incredibly time consuming, so when I became Director I developed Cantaloupe, a custom content management system. Cantaloupe was a comprehensive CMS that handled article submission, article editing, user management, file uploads, page layout, and other tasks.

I no longer manage the Whim site, but you can launch a live demo of the site in a new window. The live demo contains examples of the pages I made during my employment at Whim.

Roanoke Valley Wine Festival

The Roanoke Valley Wine Festival is held annually in Roanoke, Virginia. In 2010 the festival's administration changed and the organizers needed new promotional materials one month before the event. I created promotional posters, print ads, imprinted glass, a commercial, and a Wordpress site for the Wine Festival.

Posters

A color tabloid size poster (right) is used as the festival's primary poster and is printed by a Roanoke print shop. A letter-sized color version of the poster is used as an ad in local magazines and publications. A letter-sized black and white version is also available so the festival promoters can print copies cheaply themselves.

Exit 109

Exit 109 is Radford University's Arts and Literary Magazine. It is published annually and distributed for free to students and members of the community. The magazine features work created entirely by students. As a member of the Exit 109 production staff, I was responsible for creating page layouts and promotional flyers.

The O. Winston Link Museum in Roanoke, Virginia celebrates the work of photographer O. Winston Link. Link is best known for his photography of steam locomotive railroading on the Norfolk & Western in the late 1950s.

Mindelixir

Tee Shirt | Design Contest
2010

Mindelixir is an electronica/dance band from Charlotte, NC. This illustration is for a single-color print tee shirt. Mindelixir's branding features graffiti styles, tentacles, and geishas, and this design attempts to combine those elements in a one-color radial image.

AIAA at Virginia Tech

AIAA is the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. The AIAA student group at Virginia Tech needed a banner to use at campus and club events. This banner was required to display the AIAA logo and the Virginia Tech logo.

Scale

The banner is very large, 2 feet wide by 6 feet tall.

Roanoke Executive Network

The Roanoke Executive Network is a business exchange group in Roanoke, Virginia. I made four logo concepts for REN related to the exchange of ideas or information. REN voted on one logo to represent them. Variations were developed to show the logos in a variety of print settings and color options.
